Banii, anii, viețile și morțile
se duc, se intorc si se-nvârt
ca într-un film halucinant și mut.
Se pierd florile pe câmp,
se prind ideile în gând.
Money, years, lives and deaths
they come, they go and swirl
like in an old and silent movie.
Flowers are withering in the fields
as ideas in our thoughts take roots.

Nightly Poem #14 : Not of this world
I am not of this world
yet I live in the world
for my body and I
are in contrast sometimes.
And through all the twisted
barely walked roads of bliss
I have seen the marvelous secrets.

Nightly Poem #13 : Maybe / Poate
If I want, I'll close my eyes and see my hair go gray
and all will be memories
If I want, I'll clench my fists and close my eyes
and darkness will fall on all,
if life was built like sand on a riverbed.
Yet something else remains,
maybe the most important,
maybe all have been forgotten.
and all will be memories
If I want, I'll clench my fists and close my eyes
and darkness will fall on all,
if life was built like sand on a riverbed.
Yet something else remains,
maybe the most important,
maybe all have been forgotten.

Nightly Poem #12 : The Way Home
![]() |
| Photographer unknown |
The mirage of dreams has conquered us
Chrism, wonder and progress.
Smell of pancakes in the air,
Cars waiting at the traffic light,
It's haste, solitude and bustle
on the street, in the soul and in life.
Mirajul viselor ne-a captivat.
Mir, mirare și progres.
Miros de clătite în aer,
mașini oprite la semafor,
e grabă, pustiu și freamăt
pe stradă, în suflet și-n viață.

Nightly Poem #11 : Density
![]() |
| Mystic Skyscraper | 7466 by Droo7 |
We explore our destinies in slumber,
in all other densities but one.
On the sides of our lives
higher levels of thought are waiting.
And if not with our mind should we understand
we will surely discover that if lived by the heart
we will surely conquer this land.

Nightly Poem #10 - Sand
![]() |
| Painting by Gustave Caillebotte |
with water taking bit by bit
our parts into the sea,
into the shallow depths.
And with confusion we try
to leave this place behind
but is our faith still powerful
and is our love still placed in truth
or do we struggle in confusion
unknowing where our sand will stand.

Nightly Poem #9 - Rebirth
This white fog that
grew between us
from yesterday is our
home and solitude.
Crows in white tall trees are trembling
and yellow leafs are scattered by winds.
and yellow leafs are scattered by winds.
Not listening? To the
ground with you!
A carpet of illusions,
fragments of dreams
you laid under our
feet. Hyenas, I'll tell you
From today, fear will no longer be.
Printre nori se ivesc fețe
de învingători
Această ceață alburie
ce ne separă
de ieri ne este casă,
beznă și pustiu.
Ciorile din copac
cutremurându-se și
vântul spulberând
frunze îngălbenite,
Nu ne ascultați? La
pământ cu voi!
Un covor de iluzii, de
cioburi de vise
ați așternut sub noi.
Hienelor, vă spun
de azi temeri și frici
nu mai sunt.
I wrote this on my way home from work a few days ago and translated it into English today. I won't explain my thoughts behind the poem because it would be redundant, there is however a small note to make, from time to time we should garner the courage to jump ahead of ourselves because the forces that want to keep us still must be overcome.

Nightly Poem #8 - Butterflies
![]() |
| Butterfly by "svetlana" |
when their wings will be gravel and with hearts of sand
to fly to the sky they will desire, but from that
only despair they'll have.
Who is that, walking these lands, hidden,
many truly will wonder for she again gives hope.
That day they will remember flying
with wings made of silver and eyes seeking upwards
with flaming hearts reflecting their love. Today,
the butterflies are free.
Astăzi fluturii sunt liberi dar va veni o zi
când aripile lor, pietriș vor fi, și cu inimi de nisip
a zbura către cer vor dori, dar din aceasta
numai disperarea lor va rodi.
Cine-i acolo, călcând pe acele pământuri, ascunsă

Nightly Poem #7 - Ruby
![]() |
| "Naiad" by David Cheifetz |
You'd better listen to what's not spoken.
In the deafening silence of thoughts
the most expensive of dreams, rubies,
washed by waters, like river rocks,
forgotten in mountains, in dried river beds.
Here, red stars hidden inside clouds,
imagined by a mind, created by hearts.
De ce vorbesti atat de mult,
mai bine asculta ce nu se spune.
In tacerea asurzitoare a gandurilor
cele mai scumpe vise, niste rubine,
spalate de ape ca pietre de rau
la munte uitate in albii aride.
Aici, stelele rosii ascunse in nori,
imaginate de minte, create de inimi.

Nightly Poem #6 - Change
Weaknesses will win if we won't start
to clear our veins of vices.
Darkness will triumph if we don't love
to burn the veil before our eyes
and all there is will fall pray to mice
if we don't choose to be wise
to clear our veins of vices.
Darkness will triumph if we don't love
to burn the veil before our eyes
and all there is will fall pray to mice
if we don't choose to be wise

Nightly Poem #3 - The mast, the sail
Ride as fast as the winds last,
your body like a mast, your soul its sail.
A life, unwritten tale becoming good,
becoming wise.
And always eager to search the skies,
I started through my eyes to see
the world, yet something more is what
I saw, the winds that blow
for all of us, for some quite strong
for others gentle, will finally
and brotherly bring us towards
the common place under the sea.
I wrote this piece tonight after seeing the painting by Ivan Aivazovsky entitled "The Black Sea at Night" from 1879.

This meadow is our happiness just today,
but who will play in the meadow of our dust?
Omar Khayyam

Late Night Though
Many years ago I had the habit of walking alone at night through the most obscure of places and through some unexplained innocence I felt protected from any kind of harm. All I had with me was a small poetry book, a CD player and an old mobile phone. During those walks I wrote down my thoughts in the phone in the form of verses, I was in a bubble floating through the streets, I was observing but unperceived. Moments of pure madness in which I declared myself a refugee, a rebel in a world of illusions, a soul forever in conflict with diversions.
Time passed and that teenage rebellion morphed into a strong desire to learn and to know God. Slowly, I was forced to accept this world's cold embrace and bow down to her will. Wherever you go, God is with you.

Edward Hopper (visual) and Ernest Farres (text)
Presenting poetry and paintings together isn't something new, I remember reading that Turner had the habit of presenting a few verses along with his works. Not many artists have/had this interest, Edward Hopper, as it seems, didn't have it. Nonetheless, all is not lost, and thanks to the internationalized American culture, we can now read poems created by the Catalan writer, Ernest Farres, that are inspired, or for a better choice of words, are dedicated to Hopper's paintings.Hopper was fascinated by lights and shadows, not like Caravaggio... and not like Turner either... for him, these played a central role in the painting itself. There are mostly two degrees, rarely something in between. He renders American life from his own personal perspective and I like to point out that in his paintings, people usually can be found reading, sitting, waiting and occasionally, engaged in conversation. Not the moment for a detailed article about him and his work, but I will write it, eventually. Overall, I admire his clean and precise style, it has a calm inducing effect on my psyche, which is a good thing.
Farres wrote the volume entitled Edward Hopper in 2006 in Catalan, so what you will read here are translations made by Lawrence Venuti. I am more of a traditionalist when it comes to verses but I found his poems excellent with and without the paintings by their side. Enjoy.

| 1923 - East River |
my reading of Siddartha
exercised on me
had much to do with rivers.
Ever since that moment
they acquired a meaning
most profound and symbolic.
For a while I’ve played with the edge
of knowing we live in a never-ending
dream. I refer to an urban dream jam-packed
with buildings, hydrocarbons, aromatic mint teas,
textile factories, tanneries, and a river
that reflects the essence of dusk and provokes
a weird effect, cathartic and liberating. The city
institutes laws and rivers are rebels that try their damndest
to break them (although they rarely get away with it).
Every river is a type
of dream that lies inside
a more global dream of life,
and flowing it resembles us:
descending from pretty far away
by fits and starts, it disseminates
and embodies the spirit
of what could have been.

more or less blonde, eyes
with an inward-looking glint,
skin in the pink, wearing
a stare-till-you're-bored attitude
in a black dress that hugged her breasts
and a pair of long legs, in good working order,
she looked real swell, sure enough,
and "independent," as the saying goes.
The down time on the train was just
the ticket for stealing looks at her
as she sat across the aisle, reading
—poor kid— with such concentration
that at dusk she completely missed
the sun's last rays burning in the west,
stuck to the limitless vault of the sky.

and the tense atmosphere
wherein they find themselves plunges them
into uncertainty. The workplace
is their habitat, the substitute
for their homes. Forces
suprapersonal constrain
them both (this is called not letting on).
Beyond the slightest doubt,
shyness has taken root in them.
After knocking off, their cares are less intense
and before long forgotten (Deo gratias).
Private people suffering in private places
or, better than places, in a warren
of white walls and functional furniture.
Disturbed when confronting the idea
of a night sky filled with stars, the man,
the atomized and lonely man,
clings to the messiness of his desk.
The woman, standing at the file cabinet,
fishes for documents or something-or-other.
Sure enough, said woman’s dreams
and the man’s scruples converge
in a chronic fiasco. Anxiety
invades her till she loses
every point of reference.
This is the closed circle
through which they sink
from spiritual withdrawal
to absolute, physical solitude.
Poems mainly taken from The International Literary Quarterly, thanks.
Till next time, research these two artists, tell me if you like Hopper, yes or no, motivate your opinions, this also goes for Farres.
